Visa Overview

The Northern Territory (NT) Government nomination is a state-sponsored pathway for skilled migrants and international graduates to apply for an Australian subclass 190 (Permanent Residence) or subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional) visa, supporting migration to and long-term settlement in the Northern Territory.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for NT Government nomination, you must meet the minimum requirements set by the Australian Department of Home Affairs and the specific NT nomination criteria outlined below.

Age

  • You must be under the age of 45 years at the time of nomination.

Language requirements

  • You must have at least Competent English, unless otherwise specified by the relevant assessing, licensing, or registration body for your nominated occupation.
  • The NT Government accepts all English tests approved by the Australian Government's Department of Home Affairs.

Minimum scores

  • You must obtain a minimum of 65 points or higher in the Department of Home Affairs skilled migration points test.

Skills assessment requirements

  • You must have a valid full skills assessment from a relevant Australian Government-authorized skills assessment and assessing authority for your nominated skilled occupation.
  • The nominated occupation must be on the Department of Home Affairs current list of eligible skilled occupations.
  • For offshore applicants under the NT Priority Occupation stream, the occupation must be on the Northern Territory Offshore Migration Occupations List (NTOMOL).

Financial requirements

  • You must demonstrate financial capacity to settle in the NT. The following provides guidance on minimum net assets required:
  • Individual applicant: AU$35,000
  • Applicant and spouse: AU$50,000
  • Applicant, spouse, and one child: AU$60,000
  • Applicant, spouse, and two children: AU$65,000

Health and character requirements

  • You and your dependant family members must satisfy health and character requirements as specified by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs.

Identity and visa requirements

  • If you or any migrating dependants are currently living interstate, you are not eligible for NT nomination.
  • If you or any migrating dependants are on a student visa and have not completed studies in connection with that visa, you are not eligible for NT nomination.
  • If you have previously been nominated for a subclass 489 or 491 visa by the NT Government, you are not eligible for a subclass 190 nomination.

Residential and regional requirements

  • For subclass 190 nomination, applicants must establish a greater connection to the NT than any other Australian state or territory.
  • Generally, only applicants who have lived in the NT on a long-term basis and demonstrate a long-term ongoing commitment will be considered for a subclass 190 nomination.

Study requirements

  • For the NT Graduate stream, applicants must have successfully completed one or more qualifications after full-time study at an NT-based institution for two academic years (4 semesters) in a single tertiary course or a set of nested tertiary courses.
  • For subclass 190 nomination under the standard NT Graduate stream, applicants must have lived in the NT for at least six continuous months immediately after the date of completion of their last qualification, while holding a subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa or a bridging visa associated with a 485 visa application.
  • For applicants aged over 35 who are not eligible for a subclass 485 visa, the six-month post-completion residence condition does not apply; they must meet the study completion and employment criteria.
  • For subclass 491 nomination, applicants must meet the study completion criteria and demonstrate genuine efforts towards employment.

Employment requirements

  • For subclass 190 nomination (NT Graduate stream standard): You must be currently employed or have a recent job offer in your nominated or closely related skilled occupation, or demonstrate genuine and sustained efforts to obtain such employment. Priority is given to those with employment or a job offer.

  • For subclass 491 nomination (NT Graduate stream): You must demonstrate genuine and sustained efforts and progress towards obtaining employment from an NT employer in your nominated or closely related skilled occupation.

Family members requirements

  • Dependant family members included in the application must satisfy the Department of Home Affairs requirements.

Limitation and exclusion conditions

  • Meeting the guidelines does not guarantee a nomination.
  • Each application is assessed on its own merits; nominations are issued at the discretion of the NT Government.
  • The NT Government does not prioritise applicants by points score.
